Outlining Text Tutorial - Photoshop
1) Go to File -> New, and select a raster layer big enough for
you to type your text onto. If you're going to make an icon I suggest
100x100. Ensure the Transparent box is not checked then click on the
colour and select the colour you want the outline of your text to be.
Click ok then you should end up with a plain coloured layer such as
this:

2) Click the
text tool on the toolbar (or press T on your
keyboard) then click into your purple layer where you want the text to
go. Select the colour you want the text to be and ensure on the top
toolbar it says '
floating'. If you have it as 'Vector' this will not work. Enter your text and
don't de-select it - the running dots should still be around the text. 3) Next go to
Selections - > Modify... -> Expand... (Alt + S + M + E) and you should see a screen like this pop-up:

For a thicker border increase the number of pixels. When you're happy
with it click OK. Now, the running dots should still going around the
text, make sure it stays this way and don't de-select it. Open up the
file you want the text to go onto.
4) You should now have two images open. The one with the floating text
like I've just shown you, and the original image you want the text to
go onto. Click on the floating text image and go to Edit -> Copy
(Ctrl + C). Click onto the original image and go to Edit -> Paste...
-> Past as
new selection (Ctrl+E). Move the text where you want it to go and then go to
Selections -> Deselect. You should end up with something which looks like this:
